Tribals continued to oppose the proposed bauxite mining in the Scheduled Areas of Visakhapatnam district and demanded cancellation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the State Government and the Jindal Group of companies for the same time. On 23 January 2006, Centre of Indian Trade Unions State Vice-President, Ms S. Punyavathi, following a week-long tour in the Agency areas of Visakhapatnam, stated that approximately 80,000 tribals would be displaced due to the bauxite mining.
