The World Bank’s “consultation” with global civil society on the proposed new safeguard policies in lending and project implementation took place in Washington DC on 11 October 2014. The proceedings of the session reflect wide skepticism about the avowed improvements in World Bank performance sought in the current draft policies.
The video set is comprised of 11 segments, including segments of testimony by Narmada Bachao Andalan activist, Medha Patkar, who was a leader of one of the social movements that compelled the Bank to adopt its first safeguards in the 1980s. Participants also included HIC-HLRN Members from the MENA region. Soumya Dutta, of Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha people’s science climate group and the Beyond Copenhagen collective (India), delivered the walkout speech.
The continued discussion is also interesting.
The Bank has not posted the streaming video footage of the dialogue that ending in CSOs walking out in protest. Below is a link to the footage that was broadcast in live-stream video.
