Mahatma Mandir: Evicted slum dwellers to get help
TNN, Dec 10, 2010, 05.09am IST
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has come to the rescue of those poor people displaced by the state government to make a place for a temple of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhinagar. Following a query from the court, the state government has assured that it will take care of the evicted people from near the premises of Mahatma Mandir in the capital.

Some 356 families of slum dwellers were uprooted from the site being ambitiously developed as the place for Vibrant Gujarat festivities. When the authorities decided to evict the slums, the residents approached the court, which in turn asked the government to verify as to who of the occupants were entitled to rehabilitation.

However, without paying heed to this direction, the government went ahead with demolition drive and the occupants were shifted to an open plot near Gokulpura area of Vavol village on the outskirts of the city.

When the court came to know about the demolition drive, Justice Akil Kureshi ordered a stay on any further activity on part of the authority. The occupants complained of the hardships they have been facing after being dumped in an open plot.

During a hearing, government pleader Prakash Jani assured the court that the government agency would take all necessary corrective measures and would see to it that the hardships of the people dislodged from their place were mitigated to the maximum possible extent.

On Thursday, advocate Jani informed the court that those affected have been provided with tents, water facility and food as well. This arrangement would last till the final disposal of the litigation. Justice RR Tripathi, who is hearing the case now, has kept further proceeding on December 14.
