The fighting, the fiercest that Mogadishu has seen in months, has brought much of the capital to a standstill. The deputy chairman of the Mogadishu-based Elman Human Rights Organisation warned IRIN that the city would soon be empty as families continued to flee the fighting. Ali Sheikh Yassin blamed indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas for the displacement.
